Byzantine Catholic Diocese

There is a community of Eastern Christians in the rugged Carpatho-Rus region, also called Carpatho-Ruthenia, which is located between modern-day Slovakia and Ukraine. The Byzantine Church of Constantinople provided the Holy Gospel and Sacred Mysteries (Sacraments) to this community, which was evangelized by Saints Cyril and Methodius, who were equivalent to the apostles, in the ninth century. Despite being Greek (from Thessalonica), Cyril and his brother Methodius encouraged the use of the ancient Slavonic language in worship. All Slavonic Christians, whether Orthodox or Catholic, would use this language, subsequently known as Old Church Slavonic, as their liturgical tongue. Later, Cyril and Methodius traveled to Rome with their liturgical books to be blessed by Pope Hadrian, who also approved of their mission to create the Greek (Byzantine) Catholic faith in the Central European Carpathian Mountains.

The Great Schism of Constantinople and Rome in 1054 marked the end of the estrangement that had been developing between East and West throughout centuries. Due to this sad split, the Carpatho-Rusyns finally joined the Orthodox Church, which is an Eastern religion. Mukachevo-ecclesia Uzhorod's sui iuris (self-governing church) eventually sought reunification with the Church of Rome, reaffirming its Catholic faith while preserving the spirituality, rituals, and discipline of the Eastern Church. A number of priests and faithful publicly announced their reunion with the Catholic Church on April 24, 1646, in Uzhorod's Saint George Castle Garden, restoring the unity for which Christ had fervently prayed. A regenerated church would emerge from this foundation, and the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria-Hungary would later refer to it as "The Greek Catholic Church"—"Greek" in its liturgy, "Catholic" in its union with the Bishop of Rome. A new eparchy (diocese) was established in Presov (Slovakia), Krizevci (Croatia), Hajdudorog, and Miskolc as the reunion eventually spread to other parts of Europe.
