History Of Woodland Park New Jersey

Woodland Park History

Woodland Park, NJ is a small town located in the heart of Passaic County. Founded in 1871, Woodland Park has a long and rich history that dates back to the early days of colonial America.

Here is a list of the historical places near Woodland Park, NJ.

Rifle Camp Park

The 225-acre (0.9 km2) Rifle Camp Park is a county park in Passaic County, New Jersey. Although most of it is in Woodland Park, its eastern edge also reaches into Clifton. The park has walking paths, an observatory, a nature center, a fitness trail, an amphitheater, a bird viewing blind, and a camping area with overnight stays for neighborhood scout groups.

The same acreage purchased for the construction of the close-by Garret Mountain Reservation served as the foundation for Rifle Camp Park. The property was formerly a part of Catholina Lambert's estate, who ran a silk factory in Paterson. Following Lambert's demise in 1923, the estate was bought by the City of Paterson, which in 1928 gave the property to Passaic County. The parkland was being developed when Frederick Law Olmsted's successor company, Olmsted Associates, was hired in 1929. Construction was finished in 1934.

It has been suggested to connect the two areas ever since the Lambert estate was split between Garret Mountain Reservation and Rifle Camp Park. The Borough of Woodland Park has been debating how to connect the nearly neighboring properties as of 2011.

Garret Mountain Reservation

Garret Mountain Reservation

The 568-acre (230 ha) Garret Mountain Reservation, also spelled Garrett, is a park in Paterson and Woodland Park (formerly West Paterson), both in southern Passaic County, New Jersey. As a component of the Great Falls of Paterson-Garret Mountain listing, it received the designation of National Natural Landmark in 1967. The park reaches Clifton. The primary recreational area in Passaic County is Garret Mountain, which offers visitors grass fields, miles of walking and running routes, basketball courts, picnic spots, an equestrian center offering riding classes, and state-stocked fish in Barbour's Pond for anglers.

The Passaic County Sheriff is in charge of maintaining peace and order in the reservation, while the Passaic County Parks Department manages the park. Hundreds of high school and collegiate cross country competitions, including the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) High School State Sectional Championships at the end of every October, have been held on the property over the course of several decades.

Paterson Museum

The Paterson Museum is a museum located in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. It was established in 1925 and is owned and operated by the city of Paterson, with the goal of preserving and showcasing Paterson's industrial past. The Old Great Falls Historic District is where it is situated.

The Thomas Rogers Building on Market Street, the former erecting shop of Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works, a significant 19th-century producer of railroad steam locomotives, has served as the museum's home since 1982. Before 1982, the museum was housed in Nathan Barnert's former carriage house, a prominent local citizen and philanthropist.

Clifton Arts Center & Sculpture Park

Clifton Arts Center & Sculpture Park

After over two decades of planning and visioning, the Clifton Arts Center finally opened its doors in 2000 as a venue to promote the arts both locally and nationally.

The 14 brick barns that may be located on the grounds of the Clifton Municipal Complex were constructed in the late nineteenth century for a private dairy farm. The US Government was looking for a location to expand its Animal Quarantine Station for the entry of hoofed animals into the US at the beginning of the 20th century, and it chose approximately 50 acres in the nearby town of Athenia, which is now the City of Clifton.

For 75 years, the Quarantine Station was in operation. Rain and trucks brought in hoofed animals, foreign birds, cattle, race horses, giraffes, camels, and even musk oxen from the Scandinavian Arctic. The Quarantine Station relocated to bigger premises in 1979. The property was bought by the City of Clifton for $670,000 in 1966 in preparation for this relocation. The Clifton Arts Center, which is made up of two of the old barns connected to a modern atrium and is listed on the American Register of Historic Places, Adult Opportunity Center, Senior Center, Recycling Center, and Clifton Animal Shelter are currently located on the property.

The Barns Museum-Workshop Committee, headed by Rita Cadorin-Foti and other City officials, was the inspiration behind the establishment of the Clifton Arts Center in the early 1980s. The construction of the contemporary structure that connects the Center's two historic barns was the main accomplishment of that group. The City of Clifton established a steering group in 1997 to plan how the two barns and new atrium would be used. Councilwoman Gloria Kolodziej, after whom the Arts Center was named when she left the Clifton City Council in 2010, served as the committee's chair.

Cedar Grove Historical Society

In 1968, a group of gentlemen led by Leslie Jacobus established the Cedar Grove Historical Society in the intention of preserving the history of Cedar Grove. Their endeavor was started in the year 1968. The Canfield Morgan House was left to the Township of Cedar Grove by Courtenay Morgan, the last farmer in Cedar Grove, and in 1985 the Cedar Grove Historical Society took on the responsibility of caring for the home. Mr. Morgan requested that the house be converted into a museum by the Historical Society's numerous volunteers over the course of several years in order to assist in the preservation of Cedar Grove's heritage.

History Of Woodland Park New Jersey

During the General Election on November 4, 2008, supporters of a campaign to rename the Borough of West Paterson were successful for the first time after four tries spanning a period of twenty years. In 2008, a petition drive resulted in the successful placement of a referendum question on the ballot. The question asked voters whether or not the name of the Borough should be changed to Woodland Park.

On Dec. 17, 2008, the Mayor and Council approved a resolution accepting the election results, officially declaring Woodland Park as the borough's new name. A second referendum was placed on the Nov. 3, 2009 General Election ballot seeking to have the borough's name revert back to West Paterson.

Pikes Peak can be seen looming in the distance above Woodland Park's Memorial Park. Pikes Peak is a huge peak that can be seen from town and provides opportunities for pleasure and sightseeing. You may reach the summit of Pikes Peak using either the Pikes Peak Highway or the Cog Railway, both of which begin in Manitou Springs. Some individuals even choose to hike up this enormous peak, which is 14,110 feet tall.
