Is the wall between my kitchen and living room load-bearing?

Often, yes. Kitchens tend to sit toward the center or rear of a home, where interior walls commonly carry the floor or roof framing, so the wall between a kitchen and the main living area is frequently load-bearing even though it feels like an ordinary partition. Heide Contracting confirms whether a kitchen wall is bearing before any planning.

What is involved in opening a kitchen to the living room?

If the wall is load-bearing, the project involves engineering a beam, installing posts and footings, temporary shoring, a permit and inspection, and rerouting any electrical, plumbing, or gas lines inside the wall, then finishing the space so it looks original. Heide Contracting handles the structure, the utilities, and the finish for an open Atlanta kitchen.

Do kitchen walls have utilities inside them?

Usually, yes. A kitchen wall often contains electrical wiring for outlets and appliances, plumbing or a vent stack for the sink, and sometimes gas or ductwork, all of which must be rerouted when the wall is removed. That adds cost beyond the beam. Heide Contracting anticipates these utilities and plans for them so the open kitchen functions well.
