Medical Assistant Training

Southeast Tech offers more than 70 associate degree, diploma and certificate programs in today's most innovative fields. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be prepared for employment as entry-level Medical Assistants and will be eligible to sit for a certification exam through the National Health career Association as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant( CCMA ).

Courses involve study in basic and advanced phlebotomy studies, medical assistant competencies (OSHA regulations, basic concepts in diet and exercise theory, CPR, First Aid, pathology and physiology, pharmacology, administration of medicines and patient preparation and assessment for clinical procedures.

With both administrative and clinical training, classes include medical professional issues, patient care, clinical laboratory diagnostics, pharmacology for allied health, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, phlebotomy essentials, and emergency preparedness.

Clinical aspects of medical assisting jobs are regulated by state laws but often include taking vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, temperature and respiratory rate, preparing the patient for a physical examination, and assisting with the physical examination.

Associate degree programs may also require you to complete other types of general education courses, such as biology or mathematics. Minnesota Law requires any person with direct patient and resident contact at a health care facility licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to have a background study conducted by the state.

Playing an instrumental role in physicians' offices and outpatient clinics, medical assistants provide support that ranges from administrative duties to patient care to laboratory sample processing. Research shows that 60 percent of medical assistants work in physicians offices and 40 percent work in hospitals.

NCTC serves an enrollment of nearly 5,000 students through dozens of undergraduate and professional programs in technical sciences and liberal arts. This program prepares an individual to assist the physician during exams, interview and educate patients, measure and record vital signs and administer injections. A medical assistant is any person who is working as an aide or help of a doctor or medical office.

Some certifications will waive the graduation requirement, but only if the degree is substituted with real-world medical assisting experience. Nationally accredited exams include those awarded by American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and the American Association of Medical Assistants.

This training prepares students to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant certification exam through the American Association of Medical Assistants, which is becoming a credential requirement for most employers. The requirements for this certification are the same as those for the CCMA, but the CMAA focuses exclusively on the administrative side of medical assisting.
