Dear colleagues, Welcome back. I hope the winter break offered you the time to rest, reflect and reconnect with what matters most. As we turn the page on a new year, there are opportunities to build on our achievements and continue the outstanding work that defines UC Irvine. This newsletter celebrates the people and discoveries that make our university exceptional. Our community continues to earn global recognition: Cameron Carter was elected to the National Academy of Medicine; Tibor Juhasz and Marios Papaefthymiou were named National Academy of Inventors Fellows; and Charis Kubrin received the prestigious Stockholm Prize in Criminology – one of the field's highest honors. You will also find stories of groundbreaking research, innovative campus initiatives, and the countless ways our faculty and staff are advancing student success and amplifying our impact far beyond campus boundaries. Later this quarter, we will gather to honor additional achievements through the 2025-26 Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Awards, recognizing excellence in research, teaching, mentoring and service. Cameron Carter Elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Cameron Carter, Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. The academy selected Professor Carter for his fundamental contributions to our understanding of the role of the prefrontal cortex in supporting human higher cognitive functions and his pioneering contributions to characterizing how prefrontal cortical pathology contributes to the clinical features of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. UC Irvine now has seven faculty who are members of the National Academy of Medicine.

Tibor Juhasz and Marios Papaefthymiou Named National Academy of Inventors Fellows
Tibor Juhasz, Professor, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and Biomedical Engineering, is internationally recognized for his contributions to the development of the LASIK procedure and more recently a laser treatment for glaucoma, a condition that affects nearly 80 million people worldwide. Marios Papaefthymiou, Ted and Janice Smith Family Foundation Dean, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, and Professor, Computer Science, is an expert on architectures and design methodologies for energy-efficient computers. His research focuses on charge-recovery architectures that have the potential to dramatically reduce power consumption in high-performance systems. UC Irvine now has 23 National Academy of Inventors fellows and more than 650 active U.S. patents.

Congratulations to all the faculty members being honored with 2025-26 Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Awards for their achievements in research, teaching, mentorship and service. Leslie Thompson, Donald Bren Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Neurobiology and Behavior, is receiving the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award for Research. Christine King, Associate Professor of Teaching, Biomedical Engineering, will receive the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. All awardees will be recognized at a ceremony on February 11, 2026.
