WINTER SPORTS
In the Intro to Winter Sports class, students learn a variety of winter sports such as nordic skiing, snowshoeing, alpine skiing and more. Nederland Middle Senior High is located in the perfect environment to recreate at Eldora and other nearby trails. It is an excellent opportunity to find ways to stay physically fit in the winter.
HTMLText_03092584_788D_021E_41B9_DFC076CBE491_mobile.html = BURN SCARS
The science of burn scars, the areas left behind after a wildfire, is a topic extensively studied in the resource conservation and environmental science program. Students learn about the effects of fire on a landscape including hydrology, revegetation, erosion and how to mitigate risks of further forest ecosystem damage post-fire.
HTMLText_0320D2AC_788D_066E_41D2_E129F91DEC96_mobile.html = FIRE DESTRUCTION
Education in forestry management and natural resources, helps our future land-managers understand and mitigate the effects of wildfires in our mountain communities. Classes not only focus on fire science, but also on the economics of fire mitigation and risk management. Students walk away from these courses with the experience and knowledge required to perform wildfire mitigation plans for local properties.
HTMLText_03491AD6_788D_063A_41D5_EB438A73649D_mobile.html = ART
The Art Department at NMSHS starts students off on a path of creativity as early as 6th grade with Exploratory Art. Students in fish and wildlife learn how Colorado’s native species are a critical resource and develop strategies on how to best collect data surrounding wildlife and habitat and how to use that data to develop effective wildlife management techniques. Students leave this class with extensive animal identification skills and an essential understanding of management techniques that prepare them for jobs in parks and wildlife, forestry and more.

We are lucky enough to be the only school in the district with a state-of-the-art climbing wall built by Eldorado Walls. In our rock climbing class students either learn, or fine tune, the skills necessary to safely go sport climbing outside. We cover a wide variety of skills and topics that help students improve in the three main areas of climbing (bouldering, top roping, and lead climbing). Topics include climbing technique, climber/belayer communication, top rope belaying, lead belaying, lead climbing, spotting, and building strength for climbing. We also discuss the safety aspects of climbing that are so incredibly important, including analyzing accidents reported in Accidents in North American Climbing.

Nederland Middle-Senior High School (NMSHS) is a 6th - 12th grade public school within the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD). The school is situated approximately 8,400 feet above sea level and 17 miles west of the City of Boulder. Although we only serve approximately 250 students in grades 6-12, we operate in the largest geographic area of all BVSD schools, serving a 250 square mile area within the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, and the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests. Located in the heart of Front Range recreation, our school sits in the epicenter of world class skiing, mountain biking/climbing, and hunting, fishing, and camping and we offer the best exploratory model of education anywhere.
We are very proud of our dedicated and passionate staff at NMSHS. Collectively, our staff delivers robust Advanced Placement (AP) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, a nationally recognized Performing Arts program, and excellent Visual Arts opportunities. Nearly half of our teaching staff have earned CTE credentials and teach courses in: Outdoor Leadership, Architecture/Construction, and Resources Conservation/Environmental Science. Our philosophy is connecting curriculum to the outdoors, career opportunities, and college. Our academic excellence is exceeded only by our staff's commitment to building strong relationships with our students and families. At NMSHS, falling between the cracks is not something that we allow. Every student has a name and a special place in our school!
We offer a unique opportunity to the students we serve. With a small student-to-teacher ratio, personalized education is our foundation, and blended learning opportunities are our passion. As we continually strive to bring our natural surroundings into the classroom, we also place a high value on preparing students for the world that exists outside of our small mountain community.
